Here at Forbes Burton, we understand the trials and tribulations that come with running a business.
Even if you aren’t currently struggling, a review is never a bad idea. Taking a strategic look at progress and where you are heading can be really valuable.
Our Strategic Business Review (SBR) is a comprehensive evaluation of a company’s overall performance. It is designed to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for growth.
Designed to focus on what we call the four core pillars of a business namely:
- Management
- Finances
- Marketing
- People
We analyse these areas in depth and can provide actionable insights.
These are clear, easy to follow tenets that any business can use. It will strategically address immediate challenges and allow you to make plans for long-term success.
What are the four core pillars?
Management: Our review delves wholeheartedly into the organisational structure, decision-making processes, and overall management approach you conduct. This analysis helps to identify areas where you can achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness from the top down. All the analysis does then is allows you to allocate your time and resources more strategically.
Finances: Our thorough financial assessment provides a clear picture of your company’s financial health. This in turn, allows for informed decisions to be made regarding budget allocation, cost-cutting measures, and investment opportunities.
The SBR evaluates your financial statements, cash flow, and other key financial metrics. This then determines your business’s overall financial strength and to suggest opportunities for growth.
Marketing: An effective marketing strategy is crucial for business growth. Our review examines your company’s current marketing efforts, target audience, and competitive landscape.
By identifying areas for improvement and expansion, business owners can develop a more robust and effective marketing plan to drive growth.
People: A company’s success is largely dependent on its people. Our review evaluates the effectiveness of human resources management, employee engagement, and talent development. This analysis helps to create a more motivated, skilled, and efficient workforce, ultimately contributing to your company’s growth.
What’s the process?
During your SBR, you and your directors will be asked a series of binary (yes/no) questions. These will be related to each of the four core pillars we mentioned before.
These questions help to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each area effectively. It also gives us an excellent base to work from.
Considering your responses carefully, a percentage score is calculated, which is then used to compile a comprehensive report.
This report outlines areas for improvement, with a particular focus on critical issues that require urgent attention.
The review also includes an action system, which serves as a project management tool. Tasks can be assigned, and deadlines monitored.
This ensures that you can address and tackle improvements in a timely and organised manner. As well as identifying areas for improvement, the review allows you to engage in open discussion about specific challenges. By addressing these issues head-on, you can start to develop targeted solutions to overcome obstacles and ultimately enhance overall performance.

Where has it worked before?
The SBR has been instrumental in helping many businesses overcome their unique challenges.
For instance, a recent client was struggling to stay on top of their growing workload. Through engaging with our review, the company implemented a new management system. This meant that work was delegated and more responsibility and accountability was granted to line managers and other employees.
This, along with more effective meetings and feedback, allowed the owner to focus on strategy and business growth.
Another client faced challenges with their marketing strategy, as they were primarily reliant on word-of-mouth referrals. The review helped them develop a comprehensive marketing plan, with a combination of in-house efforts and outsourcing to agencies. This new strategy allowed the business to grow beyond their existing network and reach new customers. This is something which they had previously struggled with.
